Imperfect Perfection

Seeing Gavin in this sleep sack sparks a lot of emotion for me. My mom brought it over one evening when I was pregnant after we had gotten news from the doctors that things with Gavin would not be what we thought and he would be facing some serious challenges. She brought several outfits over but this one stood out to me. As I held it up I saw an image of myself holding up my perfect baby. I knew that he was going to be exactly who he was meant to be and that he would be perfect for us no matter what that looked like! P.S. It’s funny because I really thought he would have dark hair and brown eyes but he actually looks identical to the way I saw him in my mind!

Essential Oil Recipe’s That I Love!!

These recipe’s can be made into rollers for topical application, diffused for aromatic use or made into a specified product, for example hand soap. Please see specific instructions for the type of product you are making!

To make a roll on recipe’s: EO’s dilution instructions are commonly a 1:4 ratios. However, some are different. (check the individual bottle) For general use, I use an average of 35 TOTAL drops EO per 10 ml roller bottle then fill the rest with carrier oil. You can use whatever carrier oil you like, I just linked to one that I have used and like. Equal parts in each recipe unless otherwise specified. This is simply my personal preference.

To use in your diffuser: Do not dilute with carrier oil if you are diffusing them. Just add the oil and the water to the diffuser. I usually add equal parts of each oil to make a total of 15 drops EO in the diffuser

Vacation! (Without the baby!)

I searched my phone for the most recent selfie of my husband and I together. This was last fall. Wow. Togetherness fail.

Did any of you know that parenting creates a gap between you and your partner that tends to be about the size of the human you are co-parenting? Oh, that’s right. Everyone knew that. Well, it’s still alarming when it’s happens to you and I for one am ecstatic to spend a whole week with this guy!

He’s fun, he’s smart and he can read a map. The perfect travel companion really! #chelleandjordan

Love him!

That’s right, at some point in the last year of “new parenting” this moment happened.

Winter’s 100 miles

Well, I did it!! My husband wanted to finish our miles early, before we go on vacation next week so there was a bit of an additional rush and I’m just going to be honest, winters 100 miles were much more difficult than falls 100 miles. Ringing in 2018 with Gavin’s surgery, going back to work and then there is the fact that I just didn’t want too. Haha!

I ended up hating my new shoes for running because they hurt my feet. I think the sole was too chunky. They’re still great for everyday use but they are simply not the runners for me. I definitely had to make up some of my miles walking on the treadmill in the evenings. That took some determination considering I usually have a baby and dog and tow.

Treadmill time. Just walking along with the baby and the dog!

Then there was the rain. We got caught a few times but don’t worry, Gavin stayed dry!

Even though it was tough, all in all, I’d say it was totally worth it. My husband and also my friend Mary joined me in this challenge which really did bring some motivation and fun. However, I’m hoping springs miles feel a little easier! Who knows, maybe I’ll mix it up and add a little twist to for springs goal…

Essential Oils & Kids Emotions Post #5

EMOTIONAL FAVORITES

19

Here’s the deal; emotions are REAL. Maybe you have a two-nager or a three-nager… or any kind of tiny teen 😉 But what you know for sure is that there is a WHOLE LOT going on in their little minds. Let’s face it, there’s a whole lot going on in YOUR mind and *you* know how to communicate fully. This post is LONG, but bear with us, it’s so worth it!

Our kids are learning about feelings: what they are, how to handle them, and how they make us feel about ourselves and the world around us.

Let me hit you with this: 87-93% of disease comes from our THOUGHT LIFE. Our emotions and feelings!

How? Thoughts become emotions, emotions become attitude. Our attitude is our reaction, and all of our daily reactions make up our lifestyle. It’s those lifestyles that lead to America’s most common diseases.

So as if managing our kiddos’ emotions wasn’t important enough for our own sanity, now we know that helping them to rock their feelings helps them to live a healthy life in EVERY way. Starting with healthy emotions while they’re young is one of the best ways we can love on and take care of our kids.

Dr. Bradley Nelson from “The Emotion Code” said “A trapped emotion is literally a ball of energy, and these will lodge anywhere in the body and disrupt the normal energy field of the body.”

………………………………………………………..

Sounds whacky, but it makes sense! Listen to this: Our emotions are stored in different parts of our body.

Anger is stored in the Liver & Gallbladder.

Worry is stored in the Stomach.

Grief is stored in the Lungs (ever experienced grief that felt like it took all the breath out of your lungs?)

Fear is stored in the Kidneys.

Stress is stored in the Heart.

This makes sense when our kids have queasy tummies before a big day/presentation/test, or when our hearts have issues because of major stress in our lives, huh? Our littles are experiencing their emotions physically!

………………………………………………………..

Now get this!!

Of our 5 senses, SMELL is the only one that activates the limbic system where our amygdala lives; this is where we store and process our emotions! And you know what all-natural substances have great smells? Essential oils, of course! We can diffuse or breathe in oils to process our emotions in a healthy way. Mamas, get those diffusers going! Fill the room with goodness straight from the Earth… it was created to help us!

Let’s talk chemistry: one of the main constituents of many essential oils is phenols, which clean and repair the damaged receptor sites on our cells (receptor sites help our cells to know what to do, which keeps our bodies functioning properly). Another constituent is sesquiterpenes, which bring oxygen to the brain – therefore helping the emotion-processing center to breathe and DO WORK.

………………………………………………………..

So!!!. Listen up, exhausted mamas. Lean in, foster & adoptive parents. Open your notebooks, ANYONE who knows a child! 😉

Let’s talk about the oils to look for and use with your kiddos to support their emotional health:

THE FEELINGS KIT, which includes:

– Valor: great for BRAVERY. We love it on kids (and in the diffuser) for bedtime, before performing, to deal with big feelings, for overcoming obstacles and getting rid of fear!

– Harmony: hello! Who knows kids and wouldn’t like more harmony in their lives? Use this one for feelings of jealousy, negativity, and insecurity. We love it when we see pouting or ungratefulness and it helps our littles feel safe and secure. NEED!

– Forgiveness: We teach them about forgiveness all day long; let’s be intentional about it too! Diffuse it or apply it and help them….. (I can’t help myself) let it gooooo! If your child has experienced trauma or been hurt by someone, this is a great oil to have in your arsenal.

– Inner Child: Oh, this one is good. First, it’s just really fun to let your inner child out. Adults and kids alike can benefit from this oil! On a more serious note, when children have been abused and misused, they become disconnected from their inner child, or identity, which causes confusion (among other things). This oil is a wise choice to help kiddos stay intact with who they are and who they were created to be, rather than emotionally detaching and creating several different personalities for themselves. SO GOOD, you guys.

– Release: Tantrums, meet your match! This blend helps with the release of memory trauma from the liver cells, where anger and hate emotions are stored. It helps release frustration, which we could ALL benefit from, amiright?

– Present Time: This oil might be even better for us mamas than for kiddos. It helps us to focus on living fully in the moment. Mamas, the days are LONG but the years are short. I certainly want to do what I can to enjoy the present, so this is a common go-to in our diffuser throughout the days!

………………………………………………………..

SURRENDER:

This is a blend of calming, relaxing, emotion-balancing oils that is especially helpful for more dominant personalities. Know any stubborn little people? Give this oil a go.

………………………………………………………..

AWAKEN:

We call it “the blend of all blends” because it’s filled with a LOT of REALLY GOOD stuff. And the best part? It’s really affordable! Use this baby daily to help yourself and your kids to realize their full potential and believe that they can do HUGE things. You already know they can, and the compounds of this oil help them to know it too.

………………………………………………………..

Mightyzymes, Wolfberry Crisp Bars, Dried Wolfberries, NingXia Red.

Some recent studies have shown a direct correlation between gut health and emotional health. Sugar and processed foods can take a major toll on a child’s gut and negatively affect their behavior, attitude, and emotions. Young Living has some awesome options for enzymes, snacks and drinks that are HEALTHY, delicious (our kids LOVE them), and lead to healthier, happier kids. WIN!

………………………………………………………..

MAKE A ROLLER!

In a 10ml roller bottle, combine 15 drops Orange, 12 drops Valor and 10 drops Release. Fill the rest with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil. Roll onto your kids’ wrists, back of neck, and feet whenever needed!

You can certainly play around to find the concoction that is best for you. We all respond differently to oils, so find what you and your kids love and ROLL with it! (See what I did there?)

………………………………………………………..

Whew! My emotions feel more in check already! Who’s with me?!

Essential Oils & Kids Safety Post #1

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?02

If you aren’t familiar with essential oils, you might be wondering what in the world ARE THEY!? You’ve probably heard your friends talk about them, so let’s break it down!

Essential oils are the aromatic, volatile liquids distilled from plants. The oil can be obtained from the roots, seeds, shrub, flowers, leaves and trees and bring health and healing to the body. The chemistry is extremely complex and may consist of hundreds of different and unique chemical compounds. EO’s were mankind’s first medicine and are in fact mentioned throughout Scripture. The oils are very complex and very powerful which is why they are able to reach every part of our bodies on a cellular level.

The fragrance of the oils work on the limbic system in the brain where emotions are stored and can help relax and clear the mind as well as release emotional trauma. They can have profound physiological and psychological effects which you heard a bit about in our intros. The EO’s from Young Living are all therapeutic grade oils that can be diffused, applied topically or ingested. An all-natural way to help your body stay healthy, the way was intended to be.

ESSENTIAL OIL SAFETY

03

Safety is important when it comes to using essential oils. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all of the information available, but using common sense and starting gradually will help ease any sort of intimidation you might feel as you begin using essential oils in your everyday life, on yourself and your family. Due to the fact that Young Living’s purity and grade of oils is so high, they should be used with knowledge and respect. It is important — so important! — that we protect our kiddos and use oils properly.

I personally have chosen to use oils during my pregnancy, postpartum recovery and for Gavin since the beginning, even with his tiny body and all his considerations. I have had zero problems and lots of benefits but I also educated myself first and then made that call as his mom. You’ll need to decide what works for you and your kiddo’s! If you are diffusing around children or applying oils topically you need to understand and research what oils are safe to be used around kids and what dilution ratios you need to use. This is quite simple as most oils are fine to be used on and around kids and there are a lot of great references out there that can help you too!

Generally, once a child hits 10 years old they are able to process any oil an adult can. Prior to 10 there are oils that need to be used with caution, and dilution will be your best friend!

Here’s a few of their suggestions…

  1. When storing essential oils (EOs), it’s important to keep them in a cool, dark place with lids tightly closed (and always out of reach of children). You’ll also want to keep carrier oils (like coconut, olive, vitamin e, sweet almond oil, etc.) on hand for dilution. Always use and store EOs in glass containers, especially when drinking them in water, since most plastic products contain chemicals that can be broken down by the oil. Ingesting oils properly does not harm your body because we are made of organic cells, not toxic material.
  2. Most EOs are generally safe for use during pregnancy, but need to be used with common sense. As with any health program, you may want to consult with a health care professional beforehand. A great resource is the book Gentle Babies. I love this book!
  3.  Citrus oils are photosensitive and when applied to skin, they may cause a rash or dark pigmentation on skin exposed to UV rays or direct sunlight within 1-2 days after application.
  4.  Keep EOs away from eyes and never put them directly into the ears. Should irritation or accidental contact with eyes occur, never use water to clear the EO (they are not water-soluble). Instead use a V6 vegetable oil complex or other carrier oil (such as coconut oil or sweet almond oil) to cleanse the area and reduce discomfort.
  5. Epileptics and people with high blood pressure should use extra caution when using EOs with high ketones like basil, rosemary, sage, or tansy.
  6.  For people with allergies or sensitive skin, it’s best to test a small area (like the inside of the upper arm) then wait 30 minutes before applying to other areas. In general, the bottoms of the feet are safe for topical application.
  7. Direct inhalation (not the same as diffusing) can be a deep and intensive application method, particularly for respiratory congestion and illness. This method should not be used more than 10-15 times throughout the day without first consulting a health care professional.
  8. When adding EOs to bath water, start with 5 drops first mixed with Epsom salt to help disperse the oil. Never use more than 15 drops in one bath. If a dispersing agent is not used, serious discomfort can be caused because the oil tends to float undiluted on top of the water.
  9. Young Living states right on the bottles if an oil is able to be consumed as a food additive or not. They have a separate line called the Vitality line which is all safe for consumption. The Vitality line oils all have a white label and it is also OK to ingest an oil that is part of the vitality line but does not have a white label. (For example, Lemon oil with a yellow label is the same oil as lemon oil with a white label). DO NOT use any Essential Oil internally that is not specifically indicated for that purpose.

WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE YOUNG LIVING?

04

We care about what we’re putting IN our bodies so shouldn’t we care just as much about what we’re putting ON our bodies? Young Living owns their own farms to grow their own plants all over the world. Most of the other oil companies buy from farmers. Young Living distills 100% of their own oils. That means YL can stand by their quality from beginning to end. They call it the “seed to seal” guarantee, which means a lot if I am going to be putting them on my body and my kids’ bodies. They can say with a 100% guarantee that they know what is in those precious little bottles and that they are 100% pure. From the time the seed is sourced until the oil is sealed in the bottle, they apply the most rigorous quality controls possible to ensure that you are receiving essential oils exactly the way nature intended. YL has been around for over 20 years and they are clearly the leader in the industry. So they have had the opportunity to learn from mistakes or change what isn’t working.

YL is more expensive compared to other brands and oils you can purchase at Whole Foods or on Amazon. Aromatherapy has become quite a fad, and an ever-growing number of marketers, seeing its money-making potential, have jumped on the essential oil bandwagon, looking for an easy way to make a lot of money. They’re finding innovative ways to sell anything they can call aromatherapy. Mostly, what you find are cheap imitations: some sort of oil base to which they’ve added synthetic chemicals to create a fragrance.

If you buy cheaper oil, chances are you’re not even getting what you pay for. You must remember that aromatherapy is about more than just the smell. The $5.00 to $10.00 bottle of Frankincense you get at the health food stores might smell fine to you, but there’s no way it will provide you with the therapeutic benefits of YL’s Frankincense oil. And I guarantee you there will be an expiration date on that bottle but not on any of Young Living’s bottles. Pure oil does not expire.

While some of these so-called aromatherapy products present a pleasing fragrance, can cover unpleasant odors, and may have some limited value in relaxation, they have no real value for true aromatherapy. In some cases, these products can create serious health problems, from allergic reactions to irritations to chemical burns and they should definitely not be ingested.

There are at least 200 different companies marketing essential oils in North America. However, there are many grades of essential oils, and most essential oils available in the United States are of the lowest grade and quality. Only when using Young Living 100% pure-therapeutic-grade oil will you see significant benefits.

Family Portrait

I have a very talented friend who does prophetic paintings. She recently did this portrait for our family saying that we are strong and courageous.

What an awesome honor! It reminds me of a time when all of the many doctors were saying that Gavin’s health would be filled with serious problems. Even though it was really hard, we trusted God to take care of our family. It also encourages me to continue to believe that God is with us, wherever we go!
